Mr. Houtzager specializes in global value-added tax (VAT) matters.
He started his career in 1991 as an intern in the VAT department of Coopers & Lybrand Dijker van Dien in the Netherlands. He moved to Price Waterhouse in 1996, where he was a senior manager, responsible for the VAT strategy of a number of global clients. After the merger of PW with Coopers & Lybrand in 1998, he moved to PwC Singapore, where he assisted in advising PwC's Asia-Pac clients. Mr. Houtzager's career in the U.S. started in 2001, when he moved from Singapore to New York for PwC, advising U.S. multinational on their non-U.S. transaction taxes. he returned to PwC New York in 2007 after having spent 4 years with Deloitte New York. Having built a reputation as one of the leading VAT advisers in the U.S., Mr. Houtzager left PwC in the summer of 2010 and started his own VAT consulting firm US VAT, Inc. and became off counsel at Hill Smith King & Wood.
Besides his thriving VAT consulting practice, Mr. Houtzager provides VAT training at BNA, a leading provider of tax and legal training. As one of the thought leaders on the potential of a VAT in the U.S., Mr. Houtzager has contributed to “The VAT Reader”. He is also the principal publisher of the Value Added Tax Blog, where he comments on recent developments in the VAT world.
